Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo is eager to make his return against Rayo Vallecano after showing progress in his recovery from an ankle contusion.
A recent report from SPORT reveals that the Uruguayan centre-back took part in part of the team’s training session, signaling positive progress toward regaining full fitness.
The outlet also noted, however, that he is still not entirely free of discomfort from the injury he sustained in the match against Sevilla.
What happened to Araujo?
Araujo was forced to leave the field last weekend after suffering a severe blow to his ankle. Fortunately, medical tests in Barcelona confirmed there was no serious injury, but the defender continues to deal with ongoing pain.
Despite this, he managed to train with the squad on Saturday, though in a limited capacity. The final decision regarding his availability will depend on how he reacts to further training in the next few hours.
Hansi Flick has emphasized that he is careful about risking players who are not fully fit. If Araujo completes Sunday’s training session without any problems, there is a chance he will be included in the squad for matchday 24 of La Liga.
It is unlikely
Given the manager’s cautious approach and the defensive options available, it is highly unlikely that Araujo will start in the lineup.
Barcelona has sufficient depth at centre-back, with Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez, and Eric Garcia all available for selection. With no pressing need to rush Araujo’s return, Flick is expected to adopt a careful approach.
The final decision will be made after evaluating the defender’s condition in the next training session, but unless something unexpected occurs, he is likely to start on the bench if included in the squad at all.
